It’s Time to Take Off the Bumper Stickers
In a few minutes, I'm going out to rip the peeling bumper sticker off my battered Ford fender. It's time. The contest is over.
What's important now is to unpolarize, compromise, re-integrate, harmonize, and chill.
Not that it's so easy. It continues to amaze me that the Clintons can argue so passionately for their former opponent Barack Obama. It's remarkably large-hearted, principled and civilized, as was Romney's speech last night.
I couldn't do it. Two candidates were up for election yesterday for different offices, each of whom ran against my brother in earlier years(he wasn't running this time.) I was able to bring myself to vote for one of them; in the other instance, I simply left the bubble blank, though the guy's philosophy came closer to mine than did his opponent's.
But I can pull off the bumper sticker. That far I can go to make peace.

I sure hope others follow your lead. I hate bumper stickers and have never had one. I get so tired of seeing the ones that still have McCain/Palin on their cars. You'd think they would be embarrassed to keep that one on for a week afterward, let alone 4 years. Same with Bush and Gore.
I kinda like them in-season, kenju. Or if there are so many weird ones on a car that I can’t wait to get a look at who is driving. But when they might be perceived as gloating or dragging on with an argument that’s over, then enough…!
Thanks for your candor. I have a lot of trouble with doing the politically advantageous thing when there are painful emotional underpinnings. What's helped is to ask myself if I'm still holding a grudge. That word "grudge" is hard-edged in every way. I'm not sure how much it helps, but at least I ask it and try to do a more emotionally intelligent thing than I might have without first checking in with myself. Thanks, Peggy! -Jodi
Just saw this comment most belatedly, Jodi. I think the grudge idea sounds really good, I can see why it works. When I thought of the word, the image that came to mind was the forked end of a hammer.
