My First Moral Monday
It was stirring. A pep rally for justice. Click on this green link for a moment of audio/video to give you a feel of the day:
I was late coming to the table for Moral Monday. It has been going on for weeks.
What is it, you ask (if you're not from NC)? It's a populist demonstration at the NC Legislature with a crowd that gets larger and larger. People are gathering in growing numbers to say that our state's government is doing dreadful things: like voting to be the only state in the union that turned down federal unemployment benefits, thus cutting off 70,000 unemployed people as of midnight today. It's hard to believe.
And that's just one item.
The legislators who are voting for such actions are paying the demonstrations no mind. No surprise there. People aren't usually persuaded by direct opposition.
What the action is accomplishing is getting Team Justice organized and pumped up for the next election. So a few thousand people — three? five?– gathered in spite of a spatter of drizzle and the scudding thunderclouds to make thunderous noise and get excited and joined together to act.
I'm excited. I loved it. I object to this General Assembly's brutal actions even while sitting in my office answering email. But I'm so glad I walked the 6 or so blocks over to this inspiring rally. I think this thing is going to work. And I'll probably stir myself to take some small part in it.
And walking back to my office, I found myself repeating aloud the chant:
"The peo–ple
U–nited
Will never be
De–feated"
Can't get it out of my head, I'm happy to say.

I wish I could have been there. Perhaps in the future I can find the time.
I think there will be more opportunities. Also Witness Wednesdays.
This is fantastic, Peggy! And it makes me very happy to know that you were there to be a part of it!
Thanks, Debbie.
I think my kids and I would be into this. Is it ongoing?
Yes, Beth. Ongoing and growing! See y’all there.
The Senator in Cobalt Blue probably did not make it – but got the portrait.
I didn’t think of him, Bob. Amusing thought: him there.
