“We Have Come to Be Danced”
/Solstice celebration was today at lunch for four “weird women” in Raleigh’s Pullen Park. We stood in a big round gazebo around a little potted tree and held what amounted to a nature-lover’s mini-peer-group therapy session.
I left feeling shook loose and inspired. One of the highlights was the reading of a bold poem, "We Have Come to Be Danced" written by Jewel Mathiesen.
Here’s an inspiring excerpt:
“We have come to be danced not the jiffy booby, shake your booty for him dance
but the wring the sadness from our skin dance
the blow the chip off our shoulder dance
the slap the apology from our posture dance”
I especially like that last line. Go read the whole poem. I’ll bet it will embolden you.

I would have loved dancing with the four of you! Love the poem and will go read the rest of it now. Keep dancing!
Yay! It was a great gathering. How did you like that eclipse? My lizard brain looked at it and was afraid. It looked like a war in the sky, blood and amber, at minimum a cosmic compromise. My aesthetic brain was in awe. My esoteric brain was relieved and hopeful; Somebody’s in charge.
I couldn’t help but think of how if I’d seen that a gatrillion years ago, at a time when I was already concerned the sun might not return, it would have scared the pre-bejesus out of me.
I love that you celebrated the winter solstice in such a unique and meaningful way.
The link that you left for the poem did not connect for me, so I will have to goggle it. The lines that you posted are inspiring and beautiful.
Have a great afternoon!
Hugs,
Debbie
Thanks SO much for sharing. I love it. Have already sent copy of complete poem to my 2 best friends.
These comments and mine make another "four weird women" circle of dancers: Debbie, Greta, Kelley, and Peggy. Doesn't have to be just four though. More are always welcome. Men too.
And maybe we should have actually danced at our gazebo ceremony. It was pretty chilly and some movement would have helped.
I didn't see the eclipse, Kelley, was rapturously asleep. But your description makes me wish I had.
I am honored to be a part of this circle of "four weird women"! Normalcy is definitely overrated!
I agree, Debbie. I've been to a blog now and again with the subtitle: "Dignity Is Overrated" That has a nice ring to it too. It's number 3 over to the right under Links that Inspire.
My partner grabbed a few lines from your site and put it on our site about weird facts, that okay with you?
Sure, that’s fine.
