A Peaceful Start to the Holiday

When I was a senior at Duke, I took a wonderful writing course from Helen Bevington. On the first day of class, she told us on she was open to reading anything but Christmas poems.

Being of a somewhat oppositional nature, I took it as a challenge to write a Christmas poem that would interest her.

I got away with it.

A few years after that, I wrote a piece in favor of the commercialization of Christmas. It ran on the New York Times op-ed page.

Now here I am, decades later, faced with the moment to write a Christmas blog post. But no one is telling me not to.

So I’m simply going to wish everyone a happy holiday and a rousing start to the new year. And I’m going home to wrap packages and make more fudge.

Do or do not do whatever makes you happy, Peggy.  I am told that that is what life is about, anyway.  Finding the joy.  And to me, there is definitely a whole lot of joy in homemade fudge!

Have a wonderful Christmas and a very, very joyful New Year.  You have become a precious part of my days, Peggy, and I thank you for that.
    Big hugs and love,
    Deb

Peggy, you don't have a copy of your op-ed piece favoring the commercialization of Christmas by any chance, do you? I'd love to read it. Enjoy your fudge-making!

    Ooooh…fudge!

I hope you had a very Merry Christmas, Peggy and that you like the snow we are getting now.

Thanks so much, Debbie and Kenju.  Greta, I'll see if I can dig up that old Christmas piece.

    Happy New Year all!
